These cards were designed to introduce you to the magical mythological characters of Avalon. The cards are a symbolic guide to link you to your greater purpose, help you manifest your heart's desires, and encourage you to gain greater self-knowledge. The author explains that "to divine" means to connect to your soul. I think this is a really nice oracle. The main complaint that I've seen is that users of this deck are not happy with the 22 "marker cards" which feature a sign post with a word in a forest background. An example is shown above on the bottom right of the card samples. Most people have expected to see other types of illustrations instead off 21 of the 52 cards being essentially the same, other than the name of the marker being changed. I am not certain what the author's purpose or intent was to keep the same background for over a third of the deck. Some may feel that it was a shortcut to getting the deck out on the market faster than if original images had been used for all of the cards. However, they are considered to be "marker" cards, so this may have been the reason for the author to present them in this manner. Outside of that feature in the cards, however, I do find this to be a nice oracle to work with. Regardless of what is on the images of the cards, the accompanying guidebook offers some fresh insights into the meanings of each of the 52 cards in this deck. Some have also found that having these marker cards designed with the same illustration helps them to focus more on the meaning and intention of the card than on the image itself. Take the Death card, for example. One could look up the meaning of that particular card's marker and see that it's not at all about a physical death, but about a transformation or change on one's path. This allows you to get in touch with your own insight and form opinions of your own that are not based entirely on a card image or a set meaning. The card set is best designed to address the following types of questions -- as you'll want to avoid the yes/no kinds of questions with this oracle:
The set is based on myths and legends from the ancient Isle of Avalon. The guidebook introduces the cards as 8 Messengers, 18 Animal Guides, 5 Fairy Guides, and 21 Markers on the Sacred Journey to chart a personal path determine one's destiny. Each of the cards have golden edges which are attractive for this deck. The Messengers of Avalon contain the cards of Merlin, the High Priestess, the King, the Queen, the Novice, the Grail Knight, the Bard, and the Lady of the Lake. The Animal Guides of Avalon are contained in the cards of the Eagle, the Raven, the Hawk, the Swan, the Owl, the Frog, the Spider, the Bee, the Stag, the Cat, the Dog, the Cow, the Wasp, the Deer, the Serpent, the Dragon, the Butterfly, and the Horse. The Guides of Faery contain five cards, and include the Earth Faery, the Water Faery, the Wind Faery, the Fire Faery, and the Goblin. The Sacred Journey Markers contain 21 cards which include Partnership, Focus, Wealth, Restriction, Movement, Joy, Protection, Disruption, Risk, Communication, Perception, Burden, Letting Go, Love, Death, Trust, Fear, Forgiveness, Birth-Rebirth, Truth, and the Mystery. The characters are not actually from the King Arthur legends, but they are based on the realms of faery and Celtic inspirations. The guidebook is 109 pages in length and gives a detailed description of the cards on their meanings. It also includes information on how to use the cards for an insightful reading.
