Authors Philip and Stephanie Carr-Gomm gained their inspiration for this card set from the Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson during a workshop that they attended in America.  They felt that the Celtic and Druid animal lore could also be presented through cards in order to convey the richness of that tradition.  The authors noted that their creation of the Druid Animal Oracle and the Medicine Cards have much in common -- such as sacred circles, the honoring of directions, a deep reverence for the natural world, a belief in animal guides, and an abiding sense that the land in itself is sacred.  They offer the Druid Animal Oracle as a means to help people connect to the richness of their spiritual heritage.

This deck contains 33 animal cards which are illustrated by Bill Worthington.  I was charmed by the lovely art in the colorful cards.  They were done as watercolor paintings, and the results are beautiful.  The cards are done with a leafy border with the name of the animal noted at the bottom of the border.  The cards are oversized, so shuffling can be a bit difficult unless you shuffle them in a side-to-side fashion.  They measure 4" x 6".

This oracle does not necessarily encourage their use for prediction, but more for spiritual guidance and empowerment so that one can make and create more positive outcomes in their lives.  How we approach things from out attitudes, mindsets, and emotional perspectives can can always influence the outcome of a situation.

The accompanying guidebook is in hardcover and contains 176 pages, providing both upright and reversed interpretations for the sacred animal cards.  Also included is information on the traditional lore of the animals in addition to the Gaelic name and pronunciations of the animals.  The guidebook offers seven spreads that range from 1 to 9 cards.  The card set also includes 3 blank cards which can be used to include an animal that might not be included in this 33-card set if you needed to work with an additional animal.

The book and card set is packaged in an attractive cardboard box with a sleeve.  A laycloth is included in the box as well that one can use to lay the cards out on if they wish.  This is a set that can be recommended to those who are drawn to animals and their totem powers or for those interested in Celtic study.

One might wonder why there are only 33 cards in this set.  They are certainly beautifully done, and I could have enjoyed seeing more animals in this set.  But the author indicates that they chose 33 of the most sacred animals of the Celtic and Druid tradition.  Thus, the intent was not to cover every animal, but the ones of Celtic and Druid history.  In the book, they have included stories, folklore, and myths associated with each of the animals, along with practical suggestions for how one can work with the animal oracle to transform one's life.

It's important to keep in mind that an oracle cannot truly predict a future event.  Much of this is because of the concept of change.  We can reasonably say that the only thing that does stay constant . . . is change.  But oracles will point out possibilities, pitfalls, dynamics, and options based on the current flow of energy.  One should never take information from an oracle as being set in concrete.  Any oracle should be used as a tool to assist us and guide our lives in the present, for it is only in the present that our power can be exercised.  Thus, oracles are like a compass or a road map in the valuable guidance and counsel they provide.

This oracle is an excellent one to look at spiritual concepts and the things that exist in your inner world, as those things will influence your outer world on some level!  Sometimes we truly need to "go within" in order to deal with the outside world.  This oracle can help one to discover what influences or tendencies exist in one's life -- perhaps tendencies that need to be encouraged, understood . . . or even changed.  We are always encouraged to take responsibility for our lives rather than to blame things on "fate."  And the more we know and understand ourselves, situations, and the overall dynamics of events . . . the better position we are in to take that responsibility.
