© 1994 Sarkis AssociatesFrom my own experiences, I have found this to be an excellent deck for spiritual purposes. And that is part of the title of this deck: "The Lakota Sweat Lodge Cards: Spiritual Teachings of the Sioux." They are helpful for purposes in finding yourself more so than for predicting. Self discovery and insight on your path can make your travels smoother and bring more clarity to you in your surroundings -- as long as you are willing to listen to the wisdom being offered and are equally willing to work on applying it in your life.
I enjoy using these cards to receive a spiritual message that I need to hear. Sometimes it may be a reminder of what I need to focus on, and often I draw a card from this deck that points to issues that I need to rebalance in my life. I think the best question that can be asked of this deck is "What message does Spirit want me to hear at this time?" From there, you will learn what you need to hear. Whatever message you receive will be meant for you, and you can use this wisdom by applying it to a specific situation in your life that you feel is fitting for that message.
Rather than using the cards for divination or predictive purposes, they are meant to be used for self-discovery. Used in this manner, the cards can gently guide you toward inner growth and knowledge, based on the time-honored tradition of the Lakota people. This card set contains fifty cards and an accompanying 177-page soft cover guidebook. The wisdom of these cards stem from Chief Archie Fire Lame Deer's personal sweat lodge experiences and teachings. The cards are based on the sacred Inipi purification ceremony of the Lakota Sioux. The author of these cards is Chief Archie Fire Lame Deer who is full blooded Sioux and a medicine man. Helene Sarkis is the illustrator of the deck, and she has worked on numerous Native American projects.
The cards are approximately 3-3/8" x 4-3/4." They are of good quality stock and flexible to work with in shuffling and handling. The front of the cards have a 1/8" white border with a red-colored strip at the top, denoting the name of the card in Lakota language. A brown-colored strip is featured at the bottom, containing the title of the card in English. A card number is also denoted at the bottom right of each card.
Accompanying this 50-card deck is a 177-page instruction book, which includes a description, explanation, and meditation for each card. A variety of card spreads are included in the guidebook. At the end of the book, a pronunciation guide and a list of resources is also included. It is emphasized highly with this deck that it is not a deck of divination but is instead meant to help one with the creative energies within that are needed to deal with daily life issues more effectively. The use of these cards can lead one to a greater understanding of his or her being and purpose . . . and a better understanding in how to find balance between the conscious, physical world and the world of Spirit.
