Victorian Flower Oracle

The Victorian Flower Oracle is a charming set of 40 cards, based on the art of Victorian artist, JJ Grandville, who brings the symbolism and language of flowers to life with this work.  The beautiful deck draws on age old beliefs about the special magic and symbolism of flowers.  The flowers in the card scenes are exquisitely depicted as women who are dressed in petals.  Each card represents a particular type of flower and includes a keyword at the bottom of each card in addition to the flower it denotes.

The Victorian era was very much associated with flowers, because they loved all things floral.  Victorian women loved to receive flowers.  They loved to grow them, arrange them, enjoyed paintings of them, and also loved to read books about them.  It was a way to express their passions and bring them a lot of joy.

When I first got this deck, I knew I would like it . . . but "like" wasn't a sufficient word to describe my instant enchantment and fascination with this deck.  I immediately felt drawn and connected to the "Victorian Flower Oracle" when I opened it up and began to explore the beautiful images.  This card set may especially be attractive to the tastes of women, but it's certainly a deck that anyone can use and be enlightened by!  It is a lovely oracle for romantic questions, but it's also one that is open to any other questions that may come your way in life -- and that category can cover a lot of territory since so many varied situations can arise that leave us with questions to ponder for which we seek answers.

I love how this deck speaks to my intuition to help me addresses questions, whether my own questions or those of clients.  I think the keywords are a nice help for those who are not highly familiar with various flowers like myself.  Some of us who enjoy flowers for their natural beauty and pleasing scents may not always know the actual names of so many different kinds of flowers.  Thus, this deck not only holds its value in purposes of entertainment and enlightenment, but also with an opportunity to learn more about specific flowers!

Sheila Hamilton wrote the accompanying 132-page book to this deck.  She is an English poet, writer, and holistic therapist with a great appreciation for Victorian art. She is also experience with Tarot cards and other oracle decks.  The book begins with an introduction to JJ Grandville and his works, followed by sections for the history and language of flower symbolism.  This is followed by instructions and recommendations for how to use this oracle deck.  The author has included sample one-card draws and a sample reading with the original Bouquet Spread that was designed specifically for the Victorian Flower Oracle cards.

After exploring the important how-to's noted above, one is then ready to dive into the interpretations and information for each of the lovely flower cards.  Two to three pages are devoted to each card which begins with a black and white illustration of the card, followed by keywords and phrases for the card and general information on the flower or plant.  The interpretations then show what the card might be telling you in a reading.  It's very fascinating and stimulates the intuition!

The cards measure approximately 5 x 3 inches and are made from a sturdy, yet flexible cardstock.  They are easy to shuffle.  Each card has a light cream-colored border with the main images inset on a white background.  The backs of the cards are of a reversible scrolling design done in gold and white (which really shines in the light) and contain the title of the deck and the publisher, Magic Realist Press, in unobtrusive print on the golden scroll-like art.  So even though the book itself does not discuss card reversals, I do use reversals in this oracle set, as it seems very natural for any of these cards to make a reversed appearance and add additional depth and meaning to a reading.

If you enjoy working with oracles, are fascinated with the Victorian themes, and you like flowers . . . this is a deck that I can highly recommend!  Take a step back in time to the Victorian era and let the insightful wisdom of its symbolic flowers speak to you.
