The Wolf Song cards contain animal wisdom from more than just the wolf, as the title may otherwise seem to imply.  The 60 cards feature many different animals whose wisdom can guide and heal in one's journey.  A large assortment of animals are included in this card system.  These animals range from the four-legged ones, the furry, the feathered, and the aquatic.  The foundation of this deck is that life's only constant force is change.  How true this is!  Change, whether a seasonal change, a day to night change, or an inner or outer change within a person and circumstances pervades everything we do, wish, and dream.  Achieving a goal is also a function of change.

The cards were designed with intention to aid in problem solving.  The strength of the Wolf Song cards is not in predicting the future, but in helping one to see the present, the past that has led up to and created this present, and to shape one's future as he or she desires.  However, the cards can be used for divination, although the responses can be somewhat more spiritual in nature than a predictive reading typically is, and it's important to keep in mind that how we approach things, think about things, or react to events does tend to significantly influence our choices . . . and thus, an outcome is also influenced or created as a result of our actions, reactions, thoughts, and ultimate decisions.

The Wolf Song cards can be used in a similar fashion to a Tarot deck of cards, but one certainly should not overlook it's greatest gift offered of spirituality!  As mentioned, the greatest strength of these cards is in helping you see the past and present, and then being able to shape your own future with that wisdom.  Through an understanding of our present, we are empowered to create change for the future.  The lessons of these cards comes through the spirit of animals to teach us about ourselves, our lives, and the world in which we live.  Wolf Song cards teach with love, warmth, respect, and with understanding.

Although these cards holds a Native American influence and were created in honor of many Native American tribes, they are not classified as being strictly a Native American card system.  The deck is not defined by any specific society, culture, or tradition -- but it lets the animal guides of the cards speak for themselves.  The accompanying 176-page book provides a description and explanation for each of the Wolf Song cards in a clear and complete manner.  The animals are seen as having their own special gifts of wisdom and knowledge to share for those who are willing to be open to this.

The only thing I can say that I was not happy with regarding the paperback book I purchased with this deck is that it does not have a table of contents. So when you need to look up an animal, you will have to flip through the whole book until you find it.  I ended up making my own table of contents by just writing it in the front pages of the book.  This has made it much easier to quickly locate the animal I want to read about from the cards.  I am not sure whey the author jumped from a preface and introduction and then straight into the cards without a table of contents to help one find the animal information in an easier and faster manner.

Another thing I should mention is that there are a few card names that do not match the book.  For example, the Groundhog card is referred to as Woodchuck in the book.  The Ferret card is noted as the Black Footed Ferret in the book information, and the River Otter Card can be found under the Otter in the book.  These were the only three I found that did not match completely between card and book, so it's something to be aware of to avoid confusion when looking up the cards' information.

There are also various card spreads in the book, but I have found spreads from other sources to be more helpful than those presented in the book.

The cards measure 3" x 4-5/8."  They are wonderful tools of self-discovery and a guide to promote awareness, inspiration, and the initiation of change.  One of the best uses of this deck is for meditation and self-discovery -- much more so than using the cards for purposes of predicting or divination.

The edges of the cards are rounded at the corners.  Although the cards can be read with reversals, the back design of the cards feature a non-reversible wood grain design with petroglyph carvings, similar to the borders on the front of the cards.  The front of the cards feature the picture of the animal in a box with another title box below that which includes the name of the animal featured on the card.

I recommend that you buy the book and deck together rather than just the cards that would rely on the LWB (little white book) that comes with the cards.  The LWB is very weak in offering information for using these cards, and you will miss a lot of wisdom without the actual paperback book that was written for these cards. Despite a table of contents lacking in the book, it's still informative and useful in working with this set of cards.
